Winter Emergency Kit!

Updated Wednesday, November 19, 2014  ::  Views (2803)

Since winter is HERE it's time to talk about winter storms.  Did you see all the snow Buffalo got yesterday?  Yikes!  This reminds me about making a winter kit incase we lose power and get snowed in like we did last year!  If you prepare an emergency kit ahead of time you'll be ready!  Here's what I suggest putting in it:

  • Water (minimum 2 L per person per day)
  • Dried and canned food
  • A manual can opener
  • Flashlights (and extra batteries!)
  • Battery-operated radio
  • A supply of cash (incase stores are open but machines are down)
  • Prescription medicines and first aid supplies
  • Blankets
  • A non-cordless phone ( really do still need a landline!)

Don't forget a few additional safety items:

  • Avoid downed power lines: Assume they’re live and report them to hydro.
  • Reduce the risk of fire: Use flashlights instead of candles as a light source.
  • Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning:  keep generators and BBQs outdoors.
  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed: A full freezer will keep food safe for up to 48 hours (If half full 24 hours). If in doubt, throw it out.
